About Student Ministry Today
Thanks for stopping by, Student Ministry Today!
My name is Jay, I started Student Ministry Today as a way of sharing my student ministry experience with youth workers everywhere. Back in 2008, I served as a volunteer at the Youth Specialties, National Youth Workers Convention. After attending the convention for almost 10 years, I wanted a chance to give something back. NYWC helped to significantly shape my ministry with students, while also helping me to become a better man, husband, father, and pastor. So to be able to be apart of such an amazing event; one that touches so many youth workers, it seemed like the right thing to do. That first year opened my eyes and my heart to something even more amazing. I discovered that not only did I love working with students and being a youth pastor, I also loved having the opportunity to serve and encourage other youth workers!
Since then, I have looked for ways to share what I have learned, materials and resources that I have created, and the experiences that I have gathered from working with students and their families for the last 20+ years. I started by posting stuff on my personal blog (www.JayHigham.com). But after a couple of years the blog became a messy mix of youth ministry stuff, personal thoughts, family celebrations, and helpful items from around the web. So in 2013, I decided to split up the blog and I launched Student Ministry Today! 2013 and 2014 were tough years. Being part of a church plant, I found that I didn't have much time for writing. So not much happened on the blog.
But late in 2014, I felt God nudging me to begin writing again. I took some time to pray about what I was feeling. My time was limited, so I wanted to be sure that what I was feeling was really from God. By 2015, I was sure that God was calling me to get back to writing. So at the start of the new year, I quietly started a few new blogs. It was a soft launch to something that I am taking a year to develop. Student Ministry Today (dot com) is one of the blogs.
Here's my hope...to bless youth workers with encouragement, resources, helps, and expereince.
Ministry isn't always easy. It can be near impossible if you are not plugged into a group that continually builds you up and encourages you to keep going. I don't claim to be an expert. And I certainly haven't done it all right. I've made my share of mistakes, but God has continued to bless me and the ministries I have served.
But this is more than a blog where some guy writes a bunch of opinionated posts for the readers. I want this to be more of a conversation! I think so much more wisdom comes when groups of people share their experiences with each other. So please, join the conversation. Ask questions. Suggest topics. Maybe even submit a blog of your own! This community will only work if we come together.
Do you have a blog, or know a blog that shares really great, useful content? Let me know, and I'll add it to the growing list of resources on the resource page!
Let's make student ministry awesome, and help to create a community that pours into the lives of youth workers everywhere!
